Mozambique’s Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday the payment of old-age pensions to former Renamo guerrillas, the main opposition party, government spokesman Filiman Suazé said.
The payment of old-age pensions has been a major dispute between the Mozambican government and the Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) as part of the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) process of the main opposition party guerrillas.
Filiman Soiset added that armed members of the organization or their descendants would also receive a disability pension, a survivor’s pension and a death benefit.
Even though the former Renamo guerrillas did not pay social security, they would have a welfare system equivalent to that of workers who contributed.
At a meeting held on the 8th, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi assured Renamo leader Osufo Momade that the issue of pensions would be referred to the Council of Ministers for proper consideration.
Some analysts have warned that survivors’ pensions should be paid to former fighters from the main opposition party, lest they feel excluded and tempted to take up arms again.
