About 50 arrested in Paris over pension reform protests

About 50 people were arrested between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in Paris in the riots, which again occurred during protests against pension reform in France, according to the international press.

According to the AFP news agency, the Paris police provided this number of detainees.

French capital police chief Laurent Nunez told France Info radio station that the agents are not carrying out preventive detentions, responding to accusations from the leftist opposition condemning the police for alleged methods of intimidation.

On Tuesday afternoon, a demonstration in Place de la République called by French trade unions ended in acts of vandalism and clashes with police, who fired tear gas at the demonstrators.

According to official figures, there were more demonstrations in different cities of the country, such as Grenoble, Lille, Rennes and Nantes, involving at least five thousand people.

Protests continue this Wednesday with blocking access to an oil refinery near Bordeaux, fuel depots in Fos-sur-Mer, near Marseille, and the port of Marseille in southeastern France.

Protests of this type also take place in Bayonne, Lorient, Vannes, in some cases, demonstrators prevent the entry or exit of buses.

These actions take place on the day when French President Emmanuel Macron is due to address the country on television at 13:00 (12:00 in Lisbon).

Some of Macron’s senior advisers have already said the president has no intention of announcing a reshuffle in his government, calling early legislative elections or organizing a referendum on his welfare reform.

The unions have called for Thursday’s ninth day of mobilization in just over two months against the pension reform and hope to bring hundreds of thousands into the streets to force Macron to put reforms on hold once the project has been officially approved. decree last Thursday.

The Macron government has already survived two no-confidence votes filed by the opposition in a short period of time.

Strikes that have lasted more than two weeks in sectors such as public transport, oil refineries, energy or garbage disposal risk worsening on Thursday.

This Wednesday, an air traffic controllers’ strike forced airlines to cancel 20 percent of flights at Paris Orly Airport and Marseille.
