This Wednesday, the PS/Azores leader urged the regional government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) to consider “whether to return the word to the people” because “the reasons for political instability still exist.” and the “degrading” economic and social situation.
“I think that this is a reflection on whether it is worth giving the floor to the people [antecipando eleições legislativas regionais]not done yet, and it would be important not for the sake of the government, not for the sake of the political parties, but for the sake of the Azores,” said Vasco Cordeiro, PS/Azores parliamentary leader.
Vasco Cordeiro, former Prime Minister of the Azores, spoke at the opening of the PS/Azores Parliamentary Days, which are taking place this week on the island of Pico.
“It is clear that the government, since its inception, has been involved in a number of cases and cases of instability, the source and cause of which it is. measurements,” Vasco Cordeiro pointed out.
For a socialist regional leader, society, the Azorean economy, families and businesses “can’t wait” for the executive branch to “solve its problems of the internal instability of the government itself and the coalition that supports it, and only then look at what should be yours.” main problem.”
The PS/Azores parliamentary leader warned that “the future does not look much brighter”, recalling that until recently “in the Legislative Assembly of the region” and beyond, there were “clear manifestations of this instability that is experienced”.
“What is somewhat surprising is the state of denial in which the regional government itself lives in this whole issue,” he criticized.
According to him, “the only source and cause of political instability in which the regional government has plunged since the beginning of its mandate is the regional government itself and the coalition of parties supporting it.”
Vasco Cordeiro warned of a set of indicators that “demonstrate that this instability has prevented” the leadership of the Azores from “focusing on what is essential”.
“This idea, which is taking root and seems to me unsettling because of the global picture that reveals the regional reality, is that the Azores are gradually falling behind on some indicators,” he said, referring to the use of community funds and the “rollback” of data in areas of poverty alleviation and “regional public finance”, which also indicate “worsening imbalances, as in relation to the region’s debt”.
Vasco Cordeiro recalled that PS “for more than a year has been insisting on the need to identify support measures for families and companies” that “can help” people in the face of an inflationary crisis, criticizing the regional government. for “a restrictive vision of what should be a support function” for those who need it most.
“By supporting families and companies, the regional government must act faster and more decisively, and the region can provide support to those who need it most to cope with this situation. Autonomy must be put at the service of Azorean families and companies. placed at the service of the Azores economy and society,” he stressed.
On March 8, the only IL member in the Parliament of the Azores, Nuno Barata, violated the parliamentary agreement on advocacy in support of the government of the Azores, led by the social democrat José Manuel Bolheiro, and then the independent Carlos Furtado, formerly of Chega, also violated this agreement.
However, two deputies admitted that they were negotiating “point by point” with the government of the Azores to maintain state stability in the region.
The three parties that make up the regional government (PSD, CDS-PP and NPM) have 26 deputies in the legislature and now only have parliamentary support for Chega MP José Pacheco, thus adding 27 seats out of a total of 57, so you lose absolute majority.
PS won the regional legislative elections in the Azores on 25 October 2020, but lost the absolute majority it had held for 20 years, electing 25 deputies.
On November 7, 2020, the representative of the republic nominated the leader of the regional structure of the Social Democratic Party, José Manuel Boleiru, for the post of president of the regional government, justifying this decision by the fact that the coalition of the PSD / CDU-PP / PPM has the support, an absolute majority in the legislative assembly.
