The British Parliament will block TikTok on all parliamentary devices for security reasons, becoming the latest Western institution to ban the Chinese social network. The UK banned the use of the social network on government phones last week.
“Following the government’s decision to ban TikTok on government devices, House of Commons and Lords committees have decided that TikTok will be blocked on all parliamentary devices and the wider parliamentary network,” a parliamentary spokesman told Reuters. “Cybersecurity is a top priority for Parliament,” he added.
The US, Canada, Belgium and the European Commission have already banned the use of official devices.
TikTok, which is controlled by China’s ByteDance, is increasingly under scrutiny by Westerners for fear that Beijing could access user information around the world.
In November, TikTok acknowledged that some employees in Beijing could access information about European users, and in December even admitted that employees used the data to spy on journalists.
But the group vehemently denies that the Chinese government controls or has access to its data.
