The European Union (EU) called on Tuesday in its speech at the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 27) in Egypt for greater and immediate global commitment to combat climate change and protect life.
“The time to make promises is over, the time has come for commitments, for implementation,” said European Council President Charles Michel.
The European leader also added – in response to words spoken on Monday by UN Secretary-General António Guterres – that in the face of “collective suicide” or solidarity, Europe chooses “solidarity and life”.
For her part, the President of the European Commission, who also spoke at the COP 27 plenary meeting this Tuesday, stressed that the EU remains on the path to decarbonization, reducing pollutant gas emissions by 55% by 2050, the renewable energy option and helping developing countries to transition towards a greener economy.
“Let’s walk this path together,” von der Leyen urged.
Also today, the EU signed agreements with Namibia on the development of hydrogen and with the Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Zambia, in particular, on the protection of forests in the framework of the UN climate conference.
COP 27 began on Sunday and will run until the 18th in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with a new warning about accelerating global warming, whose funding for damages to poor countries is officially on the debate list for the first time. . . .
