Disinformation experts fear that Twitter may not be able to deal with hate speech and misinformation during the US midterm elections this Tuesday, reports the Associated Press (AP).
Previously, critics have raised concerns about new Twitter owner Elon Musk’s plan to ease moderation on the social network, as this could affect the safety of voters and people who want to question the legitimate winners of the election.
Elon Musk fired about half of his staff just days before the US midterm elections, cutting 15% of content moderation staff.
This results in a reduction in the number of employees whose job it was to keep hate speech and disinformation out of the “online platform”.
Officials said the company has also drastically reduced the number of workers viewing a particular account’s history and digital behavior, a necessary practice to investigate whether it has been used maliciously and take action to suspend it.
