A person who played the Powerball lottery in California (USA) won the biggest prize in the history of the lottery – 2,040,000,000 dollars (about 2,026,000,000 euros), it was announced on Tuesday.
The winning ticket was sold at an auto repair shop in Altadena, located northeast of Los Angeles.
This jackpot is the largest Powerball prize ever won, surpassing the previous record of $1.6 billion (€1.59 billion) won by three players in 2016.
Only four jackpots have reached $1 billion (about €993 million), but none of them have managed to reach the current prize pool, which started at $20 million (about €19.8 million) on August 6, and after three months of no winners, the prize grew a lot. No one has won a Powerball since August 3rd.
The jackpot was originally valued at $1.9 billion (around €1.9 billion), but on Tuesday morning after a calculation update, the prize was raised to $2,040 million.
Powerball is played in 45 US states, in addition to Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
