Pope Francis’s health has been improving since his hospitalization and he has already resumed his work despite still being in the hospital, Holy See spokesman Matteo Bruni’s director said in a statement Thursday.
“His Holiness Pope Francis had a good night’s rest. His condition is gradually improving and he is continuing his planned treatment,” the statement said. The religious leader was hospitalized on Wednesday with a respiratory infection.
“This morning, after breakfast, he read a few newspapers and went back to work,” he added. The statement also said the Pope prayed in a small chapel at his private hospital.
The pope was unexpectedly rushed to the hospital after complaining of breathing problems, raising new concerns about the health of the 86-year-old pontiff, Reuters reported.
The Italian news agency ANSA, citing sources at the hospital, said doctors “for now” ruled out heart problems and pneumonia in Francis. The Vatican also said that he did not have COVID-19.
