The Italian data protection agency said this Friday that it had opened an investigation into ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence application from OpenAl, over an alleged violation of the application’s data collection rules.
The same agency also accused the Microsoft-funded app of not verifying users’ ages.
According to Reuters, ChatGPT should be reserved for people aged 13 and over.
The Italian data protection agency also stated in a note that it has temporarily restricted the use of Italian users’ personal data and stated “there is no legal basis to justify the collection and mass storage of personal data in order to “learn” the algorithms underlying the operation of the platform” .
In January, just two months after launch, the app reached 100 million monthly active users, according to Reuters, making it the fastest growing consumer app in history, according to UBS research released last month.
ChatGPT works like a conversational language model where users ask questions and get answers in seconds on any topic.
