Brazilian authorities this Thursday detained a Portuguese citizen wanted by Portugal for extradition to serve a sentence for pimping (the act of forcing someone into prostitution).
The Portuguese, who was on the Interpol wanted list of world criminals, was in a residence in the Boa Viagem district, in the Brazilian city of Recife, where he was detained by agents of the Brazilian Federal Police and the Interpol office in the state of Pernambuco (northeast of Brazil).
The man was wanted for several years in Portugal, where he was found guilty of pimping, sexual harassment and illegal immigration after the courts found that between 2005 and 2008 he ran an organization engaged in the sexual exploitation of women.
The sentence of four years and two months in prison to which he was sentenced was declared final in March 2014.
Due to reports that he may be abroad, in June his name was placed on the Interpol red list and he is wanted in all 190 countries of the International Criminal Police Organization.
A Portuguese citizen was detained after the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered his preventive detention pending extradition after the Federal Police confirmed that he had settled in Recife.
