Japanese musician and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has died at the age of 71. Reuters quoted by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper.
The artist was battling cancer, which he discovered in June 2020 and ended up dying on Tuesday. Sakamoto continued to produce in his home studio whenever his health permitted. He lived music to the end, ”says a statement posted on the musician’s official website.
Sakamoto’s funeral will be attended only by the closest family members, as the musician wanted.
The composer has always lived for music. He was first introduced to the piano when he was still a child and studied ethnomusicology at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo.
Sakamoto has been responsible for soundtracks for several films, namely The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, and has been awarded Oscars, Grammys, and Baftas throughout his career.
