The European Parliament approved this Thursday Croatia’s entry into the Schengen free movement area and the subsequent abolition of internal borders, lacking only the EU Council’s approval to complete the process.
The report of MEP Paulo Rangel (SDP) was approved by 534 votes to 53 with 25 abstentions, and the European Parliament called on the Council of the European Union (EU) to continue the process and take a final decision on the abolition of passenger controls at Croatia’s internal borders before the end of the year.
“Croatia has passed the most comprehensive Schengen membership assessment of any EU country to date,” Rangel said in a statement, adding that Zagreb has implemented 281 recommendations in eight areas of Schengen law.
“The Commission and the Council confirmed the readiness of the country to fully comply with the Schengen rules. The European Parliament fully agrees: the removal of controls at internal borders should take place before the end of this year,” he added.
The Schengen area includes 26 countries (22 EU member states, including Portugal, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).
