Children and young people with mild symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as cough, sore throat or runny nose, can go to school and should only stay home if they have a fever.
In recommendations published this Thursday, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) reminds that respiratory tract infections are common in children and young people, especially during the autumn and winter months, and in most cases they are not serious.
The health authority, however, advises them to stay at home if they have a fever, to be able to return to school when they are discharged for health reasons or no longer have a fever, and when they feel well enough to attend school.
DGS urges that all children and young people with symptoms of a respiratory tract infection “should be taught to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and/or sneezing”, to throw away tissues and to wash or sanitize their hands.
If complaints worsen, parents should contact the SNS24 (808 24 24 24) or the attending physician, especially if the child is under two years old, stresses the SRS.
Children and young people living with a person who has tested positive for covid-19 should continue to attend school with basic hygiene measures.
