The city of Rome will reduce the number of electric scooters

The city council of Rome will reduce the number of electric scooters in the Italian capital, but will not ban them, as the municipality of Paris decided on Monday after a referendum.

The municipality has indicated that there will be a significant reduction in transport, more parking will be created and that it will be forbidden to leave vehicles in some areas.

The Italian capital has struggled with the problems associated with the mass use of this transport, such as parking on the sidewalks, leaving the lanes reserved for public transport, and traffic violations.

In June 2022, a regulation was approved to deal with the problems, which has not yet been applied, but after the Paris decision, the Italian municipality guaranteed that it would come into force after the Easter holidays.

From that date, only three of the seven companies operating in Rome will be selected and the number of electric scooters will increase from 14,500 to 9,000, of which only 3,000 will be able to circulate in central areas.

The number of e-bikes will also decrease from 12,500 to 9,000.

A maximum speed of 20 km/h and 6 km/h in pedestrian areas will also be set and parking lots will be created.

“We want to address several critical points in an area very dear to the citizens, both in terms of security and in terms of the urban landscape. We need to ban these cars from being parked anywhere, and also redistribute them throughout the city, not just in the historic part of the city. centre,” said Mobility Adviser Eugenio Patane, quoted by EFE.

“In the Roman context, we thought it would be useful to integrate this service by regulating it, yes, with strict rules,” he added.

The citizens of Paris voted to ban electric scooters in the city starting in September in a consultative referendum by the municipality, which was attended by 103,000 people, according to President Anne Hidalgo.

According to the mayor of Paris, the results of the referendum were “very clear” with 89 percent of the vote rejecting the existence of scooters in the French capital.
