Authorities said about a thousand families are living in flooded homes in the municipality of Marromeu, Sofala province, central Mozambique, due to soil saturation after the flood.
“The population is living underwater because of the floods,” Marromeu administrator Enriqueta do Rosario said in a statement to reporters.
The floods also threaten the functioning of public services and trade, Rosario said.
A total of 33 schools were flooded in Marrom, forcing about 3,000 students to attend classes in makeshift classrooms.
Administrator Marromeu explained that due to the saturation of the soil, water comes out of the ground, which affects public and private infrastructure.
“What is happening is that all the soils are oversaturated with water, and the level of the riverbed has also risen,” added Aristides Armando, a delegate from the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) in the province of Sofala.
“We provide assistance to affected families with food and non-food items,” Armando said.
The official added that INGD is exploring new areas to relocate families living on flooded lands in the municipality of Marromeu.
