Angolan citizen Gelson Emanuel Quintas “Man-Jenas”, who has been detained with his family in Mozambique for more than a year for exposing alleged involvement of senior Angolan authorities in drug trafficking, “fears of food poisoning,” UNITA said on Wednesday. , Angolan opposition.
A group of deputies from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) was in Mozambique from 21 to 26 March to petition the authorities and civil society of that country for the protection and freedom of “Man-Gene”.
This Wednesday, at a press conference in Luanda, the head of the UNITA parliamentary delegation, Olivio Quilumbo, presented a report on the visit, noting that the Angolan’s health condition is “weak and in need of care.”
“Man-Genas is afraid of becoming a victim of food poisoning. His wife, who is pregnant, says she has been denied medical care for over a month,” he said, noting that she lacks prenatal care.
The wife of a citizen of Man-Genas, according to the UNITA deputy, also fears for her life “during childbirth, which is expected very soon.”
According to the report, the UNITA parliamentary delegation was unable to directly contact the detained citizen and his family, and this communication was possible only by telephone.
More than a month ago, Man-Genas denounced through social media the alleged involvement of high-ranking figures in the Angolan National Police and Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in drug trafficking.
He, his wife and two other children decided to leave the country due to alleged “pressure from the authorities” and fear of life, which was reported several times on social networks, especially after arriving in Mozambique, from the police station where they are located. Now.
The wife of the “Man-Genas” in videos posted on social networks calls for help, medical attention, and also condemns assassination attempts in this Portuguese-speaking country.
The UNITA deputies stated that they were received by the Ambassador of Angola in Mozambique to get acquainted with the legal and humanitarian situation of Gelson Emanuel Quintas, his wife and children.
They also held a meeting with the Mozambique National Migration Service (SENAMI), where they asked for clarification on the situation of the Angolans in that country, “but did not show willingness on the part of those in charge.”
Mozambique’s interior ministry and SENAMI “demonstrated a lack of openness and accessibility” to respond to a request from a delegation from the UNITA parliamentary group, the report said.
Both institutions, the Maninhos say, declined their official request to visit and contact directly with “Man-Genas” and his family.
They recommend that the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Health of the Republic of Angola, together with the relevant ministries of Mozambique, ensure and guarantee the conditions of asylum, security and medical care for the Man-Gena family.
They also ask the Angola Attorney General’s Office (AGP), within the framework of legal agreements between the two states, to investigate and investigate complaints filed by citizens and that human rights organizations and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights mobilize to draw attention to the “seriousness” of the situation of the Angolan citizen and his family.
“That African states, sincerely committed to combating drug trafficking, learn from the alleged involvement of state agents in a network of drug traffickers,” they also recommend.
UNITA deputies also held meetings with the president of the parliamentary group RENAMO – National Resistance of Mozambique (opposition) – with representatives of Mozambican civil society and interacted with local and international media in order to inform and raise awareness about the situation of the family concerned.
Government authorities in Luanda have not yet commented on the “Man-Genas” case.
