On Wednesday morning, a 25-year-old man armed with an ax killed at least four children at a private kindergarten in the city of Blumenau, Santa Catarina state, in southern Brazil. As a result of the attack, four more children were injured, one of them very seriously. The victims were three boys and a girl between the ages of five and seven.
After committing the crimes, the killer fled the scene but went to surrender at the headquarters of the military police in the city, an important tourist municipality where a large number of German descendants live. Simone Desaparecida Camargo, a teacher, thought the attack was a robbery and locked the children in the bathroom. Only later did he realize that the suspect had come with the intent to kill.
