Koko, a Labrador Retriever, is being treated for alcoholism in the UK. According to the animal rescue team that took him in for treatment, the dog needs to be monitored 24 hours a day as it has very severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms. According to British newspaper Telegraph, this is the first dog to be treated for alcoholism.
“We would like to introduce you to a new member Danroamine Special Care Unit, an adorable two-year-old girl named Coco. He has been with us for more than a month and has been in intensive care since his arrival. His story is tragic and shows how vital our special care unit is,” the animal shelter said.
Coco, along with another dog, was taken to a shelter in Plimpton, UK, following the death of their owner. As far as they could find out, the owner forgot alcoholic drinks in places that the animals managed to get to. So they became addicted.
Upon arrival at the shelter, the animals began to have convulsions as a result of alcohol deprivation. Coco was sedated for four weeks to prevent any adverse reactions. His companion eventually died despite the efforts of the crew.
It is known that the animal is already out of danger and is adapting to a new way of life. “Accustoming a dog to alcohol is a novelty for us,” you can read in the Facebook post of this institution.
A Danroamine Special Care Unit believes that Koko will be adopted again, although the script is not yet possible. “He starts behaving like a normal dog. He is not yet ready for adoption. Although physically he seems to have recovered, mentally he is sometimes very worried,” they explained.
The Animal Care Association took the opportunity to alert the public to the number of deaths associated with dogs suffering from these problems. “No one knows the details of how these dogs became alcoholics, but we do know that without our care, Koko probably would not have survived.”
