An instructive discussion of the BES/GES process, which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday at the Monsanto Court in Lisbon, was delayed after a year of waiting because the court forgot to notify the three defendants. It was scheduled for May 2, 3, 4 and 5.
It was supposed to happen this Tuesday, almost three years after the prosecutor’s indictment became known.
The decision of the investigating judge Pedro Santos Correia was taken after a break in the process, after a debate between lawyers and the Prosecutor’s Office (MP) due to the position of the deputy, who joined the process only today, and due to the lack of notification of some defendants, this issue was the only raised by the justice of the peace in the adjournment.
“Days 02, 03, 04 and 05 May, at 09:30, continuing at 14:00, every day in this court of Monsanto,” confirmed Judge Pedro Santos Correia.
This case, which is considered one of the largest cases in the history of Portuguese justice, adds to the main proceedings 242 investigations that have been combined together and complaints from more than 300 individuals and entities living in Portugal and abroad.
The collapse of the Espírito Santo Group (GES) in 2014 will cause more than 11.8 billion euros in damages, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), whose indictment amounted to about four thousand pages.
