Canada targeted by pro-Russian cyberattack during Ukrainian PM’s visit

The government of Canada was the target of a cyberattack by pro-Russian “hackers” during a visit by Ukraine’s prime minister, Canadian Chief Executive Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday, assuring that “this will in no way affect support for Ukraine.”

The attack, which is behind the group NoName on the Telegram social network, paralyzed several official “sites” for several hours on Tuesday morning.

Among the affected “sites” were the head of state and the Senate during the action that took place during the meeting of the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal with Trudeau in Toronto.

“It is not uncommon for Russian ‘hackers’ to target countries that demonstrate unwavering support for Ukraine, that host Ukrainian delegations or Ukrainian leaders, so the timing is not surprising,” the head of the Canadian government stressed during a joint press conference. with Shmygal.

Robin Houko, a spokeswoman for the Canadian electronic surveillance agency, noted that denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are “not uncommon” against countries visited by members of the Ukrainian government.

“While these incidents attract attention, they have very little effect on the systems involved,” the official assured.

The Ukrainian prime minister, who is due to travel to Washington shortly, and Trudeau announced on Tuesday the conclusion of negotiations aimed at modernizing the free trade agreement between the two countries, new shipments of Canadian arms and ammunition to Ukraine, and an agreement with the Canadian company Cameco on the supply of to Ukraine of nuclear fuel until 2035.

Ottawa has also imposed new sanctions on Russians and Russian organizations, including those associated with the Wagner paramilitary group and the Russian aviation sector, as well as the Belarusian financial sector.

The Russian military offensive into Ukraine, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion — justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security — was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia.
