Hungary on Tuesday signed new agreements guaranteeing uninterrupted access to Russian energy, according to the Hungarian foreign minister, in another sign of the country’s continued diplomatic and commercial ties with Moscow.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Russian media that Russia’s state-owned Gazprom had agreed to allow Hungary to import natural gas in excess of the agreed volumes in 2022 if necessary.
The agreement allows Hungary, Szijjarto said, to pay for natural gas imports in installments if market prices exceed $163 (€150) per cubic meter of gas.
Szijjarto met in Moscow with Deputy Prime Minister of Russia for Energy Alexander Novak and head of the Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom Alexei Likhachev.
In a press release, the Hungarian minister stressed the importance of access to Russian energy for Hungary’s security, regardless of the political considerations that arose as a result of the war.
“As long as the issue of energy supply is physical and not political or ideological, whether you like it or not, Russia and cooperation with Russia will remain decisive for Hungary’s energy security,” he added.
Szijjártó is one of the few officials from a member of the European Union who has met with Russian authorities since the start of the war.
