Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu will visit Russia Sunday through Wednesday at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu, where he will meet with local military leaders, a Beijing official said on Friday.
Tang Kefei said the Chinese minister, who has been in power since March 12, will also visit several Russian academies as part of strengthening the “holistic strategic alliance.”
The Chinese and Russian militaries “maintained close cooperation,” which led to “new developments in strategic communications, joint military exercises, and practical cooperation,” Tang said.
According to the spokesman, such interaction “enriched the comprehensive strategic partnership” between Moscow and Beijing.
At the end of March, the Chinese military said it was “ready to expand cooperation and communications” with the Russian military.
Lee, who was sanctioned by the US in 2018 for allegedly buying weapons from the Russian state-owned company Rosoboronexport, was appointed defense secretary in March this year.
The Chinese government, which has shown its opposition to sanctions against Moscow, released a statement in February about what it calls the “conflict” in Ukraine, in which it advocates a ceasefire and abandoning the “Cold War mentality.” The West is for putting “the aggressor and the aggressor” on the same level.
In the document, Beijing defends respect for the territorial integrity of countries, including Ukraine, and the “legitimate security interests of all parties” with respect to Russia.
