The Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities said this Friday that the Portuguese consular authorities have no knowledge of Jack Teixeira, a Portuguese descendant and member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard who was detained on suspicion of leaking confidential military documents.
“This is a situation that we are obviously monitoring. The truth is that this person and the news has gone public, we don’t have anyone named Jack Teixeira in our consular records, we don’t. This is a fact, so he is not registered as a Portuguese citizen with that name,” said Paulo Cafofo, who was interrogated by Lusa on the sidelines of his visit to the island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde.
21-year-old Jack Teixeira is suspected of releasing highly classified documents of international importance, which mention the spying activities of the United States of America against allies and enemies, as well as confidential data of military intelligence about the war in Ukraine.
“Our position here is simply to follow this case. But follow-up, which turns out to be limited, because in the records we have and the information we have, there is no Portuguese citizen with that name that does not exist in our records,” insisted the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities.
The young man, whose identity was revealed on Thursday, will be charged with unauthorized deletion of classified US Department of Defense information, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said after his arrest.
