French Constitutional Council approves raising retirement age despite protests

Raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 in France was approved by the French Constitutional Court this Friday. According to TV channel sky newsThe Constitutional Council of this country spoke in favor of the reforms announced by the President of France Emmanuel Macron.

The Council’s decision comes after months of demonstrations and political struggles against this crucial draft of Emmanuel Macron’s second five-year plan. According to the politician, changes are necessary to save the French pension system, since in its current form it is not viable.

Several French cities have been the scene of violent protests in recent weeks. Many of them led to direct clashes with the authorities and acts of vandalism. Days of demonstrations took place in Paris, bringing together more than a million French people.

It should be noted that France is one of the European countries where the retirement age is lower. In Portugal, for example, the retirement age for civil service is set at 66 years and seven months. In Germany and Italy, retirement, in turn, occurs at age 67.

The French opposition intends to continue the fight against pension reform

The main French opposition parties have declared their determination to continue fighting against the proposed revision of the pension law and have warned of rising protests.

“The fight continues,” Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the radical left, responded, while Marine Le Pen, leader of the far right, considered that “the political fate of pension reform has not been decided.”
