The Association of Ukrainians in Portugal is preparing a letter that it intends to hand over to the President of Brazil during his visit to Portugal, which acknowledges the demonstration of indignation, Pavlo Sadokha told Lusa.
“The Ukrainian community is preparing a letter that will be delivered when [o Presidente] Lula [da Silva] to visit Portugal on 25 April and we are also thinking of holding a demonstration, which has yet to be located, to demonstrate our position. We did not agree with what Lula said,” the head of the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal said.
“We hope that President Marcelo [Rebelo de Sousa] and Prime Minister António Costa will try to change this position of President Lula,” he added.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Saturday after a visit to the People’s Republic of China that the United States should stop “promoting war” in Ukraine and the European Union should “start talking about peace.”
“The United States should stop encouraging war and start talking about peace, the European Union should start talking about peace,” the Brazilian head of state told reporters in Beijing before leaving for the United Arab Emirates.
For the president of the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal, Lula da Silva’s position indicates “support” for totalitarian regimes such as Russia and the People’s Republic of China, and underlines that he does not understand the position of the Socialist Party.
“Yesterday [domingo] we saw several statements from different parties [portugueses] and we do not understand this position PS. They agree with Lula’s statements,” he said, noting that “until now” Portuguese politicians have helped Ukraine.
Pavel Sadokha recalled that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal visited the regions of Ukraine “where Russian military personnel committed crimes considered war crimes” and, thus, were able to explain to the President of Brazil “what is really happening.”
“We hope that this will happen,” Sadoha said, adding that Portuguese politicians can convince President Lulu and explain that it was the Russian Federation that started the war against Ukraine and that it is “not so easy” to end the conflict with an agreement between the parties. world”.
“President Lula said that Ukraine could cede Crimea [anexada em 2014] or other Ukrainian territories at the expense of peace. This is not a solution either for Ukrainians or for European countries. Russia did not start this war in order to occupy some territories,” he said.
Pavel Sadokha also said that Ukrainians in Portugal were expecting “greater support” from Brazil, where, in his words, there is a “huge community” of Ukrainian citizens.
“We also know that the Ukrainian community in Brazil has already written a letter to Lula because they do not agree with the statements” of the head of the Brazilian state, Sadhoka said.
