On Monday, the U.S. Attorney General’s office indicted two people for opening an illegal police station in New York City’s Chinatown, Manhattan, on the orders of China’s National Police, to control and prosecute Chinese residents who criticize the Beijing authorities.
In another case, the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York also accused 34 other alleged Chinese law enforcement agents of running a “massive campaign” on social media to “threaten Chinese dissidents, exacerbate divisions among Americans, and undermine confidence” in the democratic process.
“In the heart of the bustling Chinatown, in Lower Manhattan, a dark secret was hidden a few months ago: an entire floor of the building was installed and not declared by the police station of the Chinese National Police,” the federal prosecutor said.
