Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is visiting Brazil, said on Monday that the two countries have the same vision of current events in Eastern Europe, namely with regard to the war in Ukraine. Lavrov made the announcement at the Itamaraty Palace, the seat of Brazilian diplomacy in Brasilia, after thanking his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira, who he described as Brazil’s great contribution to finding a solution to the war.
“We are talking about several very important issues, and the views of Russia and Brazil on events in Russia are unique. We are also seeking a more just, more correct and more legitimate world order. In this, we have a multipolar worldview, taking into account the account of several countries, not just a few,” Lavrov said, wanting to show the coincidence of the positions of his country’s President Vladimir Putin and Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
Sergey Lavrov’s statements came two days after Lula attacked Ukraine during a visit to Asia, accusing it of being as responsible for the war as Russia, which had invaded. And for blaming the US and the European Union for being responsible for the continuation of the horrendous armed conflict in Ukraine that has claimed thousands of lives since Russian troops invaded the country on February 24 last year.
Although this is not in the plans of either Lavrov or Lula, sources close to the Brazilian suggested that a meeting between them would take place this Monday. This is another episode that demonstrates Lula da Silva’s radicalization and sympathy for Russia, despite the fact that the Brazilian said that Brazil is neutral and impartial in relation to the war in Ukraine and that all its movements are aimed at finding peace.
