A group of scientists using ultraviolet light has opened a hitherto unseen chapter of the Bible. It was lost over 1500 years ago. The section is one of the first translations of the Old Testament, the British newspaper writes. Independent.
The discovery was published in the magazine New Testament Studies researchers of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
The chapter, possibly written in the sixth century, was hidden under three other layers of text. It should be noted that at that time, given the shortage of parchment, it was customary to reuse already written sheets. The previous biblical text was erased and a new one was written. That’s how the piece got lost.
The researchers explained that the discovered text is an interpretation of the twelfth chapter of the Matthew Bible. So far, this is the only trace of the fourth manuscript that testifies to the Old Syriac version. It will also help to understand the differences in the information contained in the original texts and in the translations.
“This discovery proves how productive and important the interaction between basic research and modern digital technologies can be when it comes to medieval manuscripts,” said Claudia Rapp, director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
