The skeleton of a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex, a creature that roamed planet Earth 67 million years ago, has been sold for around 5.5 million euros. According to Reuters, this figure was lower than expected. The auction took place in Zurich on Tuesday.
The artifact is 3.9 meters high and 11.6 meters long. TRX-293 TRINITY is a skeleton of 293 bones from three different tyrannosaurs found between 2008 and 2023 in the US states of Montana and Wyoming.
An anonymous buyer offered about 4.8 million euros, which is less than the estimate (between 5 and 8 billion euros). The final price was 5.5 billion euros, including auction fees.
Switzerland’s largest auction house, Koller, told Reuters that it was the first time in Europe and the third time in the world that a “complete and exceptional quality” T-Rex skeleton has been auctioned.
More than half of the bones of the skeleton are original. The rest are substitutes made from plaster and epoxy molds.
Two other T-Rex models found in North America sold for €7.6m and €28m in 1998 and 2020.
