Mozambique’s Attorney General (PGR) said this Wednesday that in 2022, justice placed 41 defendants on remand and three released for alleged involvement in kidnappings, acknowledging the “sophistication and complexity” of this type of crime.
“Kidnapping crimes continue to be recorded in the country, which have created insecurity among citizens, restricting basic rights and freedoms such as free movement” and “withdrawal of investments”, which affects the “national economy,” Buchili said during the annual briefing. about the rule of law and crime in a country that pays this Wednesday and Thursday in Parliament.
The head of the Public Ministry of Mozambique said that last year 15 criminal cases related to kidnapping were initiated, almost the same number were registered in 2021, when 14 cases were initiated related to this type of offense.
Of the 43 defendants drawn up in 2022 in the kidnapping case, 40 are men and three are women, aged 26 to 55.
Deeming this type of crime “complex and sophisticated”, PGR pointed out that perpetrators now prefer to hide victims in captivity in “gentle urban areas” rather than outlying areas to mislead authorities.
PGR repeated a charge it had already made in 2021 that magistrates, lawyers, police investigators and police officers were involved in kidnapping groups.
This year alone, “in addition to disciplinary responsibility, two members of Sernik were brought to criminal responsibility.” [Serviço Nacional de Investigação Criminal] and two PRM agents [Polícia da República de Moçambique]”, – put forward Beatrice Bucili.
Buchili also noted that the preparation of some kidnappings is carried out in prisons by prisoners, noting that in 2022, 12 mobile phones were confiscated from defendants involved in these crimes.
“We are aware that we need to do more to increase the confidence of our citizens, however, we reiterate that the cooperation of everyone is essential, as this is the only way we can effectively contribute to the prevention and fight against this violent crime that is rampant in our country. . society,” the Attorney General of Mozambique emphasized.
