Polytechnic of Porto preemptively suspends three teachers on suspicion of harassment

The Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP) has preemptively suspended three teachers on suspicion of student harassment following complaints received on Tuesday, the institution said Thursday.

“The Polytechnic Institute of Porto received last Tuesday [18 de abril] student complaints regarding teacher harassment and, as a result, three disciplinary proceedings have been initiated in connection with the pending allegations,” the IPP said in a statement sent to newsrooms.

Adding that “the accused teachers were provisionally removed from their duties in order to ensure the safety and integrity of the entire process, and to ensure the safety and protection of the alleged victims.”

The Polytechnic Institute of Porto said that at the moment they cannot provide more information about the processes under consideration, since at this stage they are of the so-called “secret nature”.

The processes in question have not yet been brought to the attention of the Ministry of State (MP), but as soon as the appointed instructors can prove / blame the facts, the Polytechnic Institute of Porto “immediately” complies with the law by filing a complaint with the judicial authority. power, he stressed.

“At the moment, the Polytechnic Institute of Porto continues to make every effort to identify situations that may lead to new cases of harassment,” he stressed.

The IPP information explains that it has a set of mechanisms that encourage and facilitate the reporting of cases of this kind, namely a special committee on the prevention of harassment, as well as, in the context of victim support, psychological, legal and social monitoring.

Introduced at the institution since 2022, the whistleblowing channel on the Polytechnic website (www.ipp.pt or www.ipp.pt/denuncia) always protects the person making the complaint, which can be completely anonymous or confidential, IPP said Luce in this Thursday.

“The Polytechnic Institute of Porto strives from the very beginning to preserve in all forms the privacy of alleged victims in order to avoid situations of personal harm,” he said.

So far, there have been 24 complaints from the academic community, three of which are related to these incidents of harassment.

The institution warned that “harassment is unacceptable and unacceptable in any form.”
