The Vatican announced this Friday that its commission to combat child crime [abuso sexual de crianças] it was supposed to strengthen cooperation with the Ministry of Evangelization, namely, to train priests in dioceses far from Rome.
In 2014, Pope Francis established the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors to combat juvenile delinquency. [palavra que se recomenda que substitua pedofilia] inside the Church. This commission will now cooperate with the Dicastery (Ministry) of Evangelism after a three-year agreement.
The commission came under fire recently after its most powerful member, Hans Zollner, resigned in March, saying it suffered from structural problems and high transparency.
The agreement announced on Friday provides for the work of a commission with the dicastery to organize the training of newly appointed priests.
In an interview published by Vatican News, US Cardinal Sean O’Malley, head of the commission, said it would help dioceses “develop programs that will allow them to receive victims.”
He added: “If we had had the opportunity in the past to get information about (minors) protection and understand (these issues), the history of the Church would have been different.”
Pope Francis asked the Commission to “work with episcopal conferences to make sure they have the capacity to accompany and work with the victims.”
Responding to a question about criticism of the Commission, Cardinal O’Malley noted that when it was created in 2014, there were “unrealistic expectations about what this group of volunteers could do to address the problem of sexual assault in the Church and in the world.” .
