About 50 people took part this Saturday afternoon in Faro in a demonstration in support of a trainee doctor who denounced alleged cases of error and negligence in the surgical service of the Hospital de Faro.
At the rally, called by a movement in support of the doctor Diana Pereira, which gained momentum on social networks, the participants put up banners and posters with the words: “How much noise fits in silence” and “Defender to protect.”
The concentration started at 17:00 next to the church of San Luis, in the area of the Hospital de Faro, after which the demonstrators silently followed the human cordon that surrounded the hospital department.
About an hour later, about 50 people stopped at the main entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Services, where they observed a minute of silence for “all hospitalized patients.”
Nydia Silva, one of the organizers of the event, told the Lusa news agency that the demonstration “was aimed at expressing gratitude to the doctor who had the courage to denounce 11 cases that occurred in the hospital ward.”
“The rally, which arose as a result of the spontaneous expression of the will of a group of citizens, is intended to thank Dr. Diana for her courage in condemning what others lack the courage to do,” he said.
Nydia Silva was keen to emphasize “that the protest comes from citizens to citizens and is not directed against medical workers, doctors and nurses, but rather for the courage shown by Diana Pereira and against poor service in hospitals.”
“Doctors are people too and make mistakes, but mistakes must be acknowledged, and correcting wrong situations is the task of the administration,” he said.
The organizer added that she expected more people to participate, “because the Facebook page created to support the doctor has more than 800 followers.”
“Because of the support given to the demonstration, we were expecting a lot more people. Unfortunately, this did not happen, but there were few and good ones,” he concluded.
Earlier this month, a doctor reported 11 alleged cases of errors and sloppiness in the surgery service at the Hospital de Faro that occurred between January and March, filing a complaint with the Judicial Police against her former training adviser and director of the service. Surgery at the Hospital de Faro.
Of the 11 reported cases, Diana Pereira said three patients died, two were hospitalized at the time of the complaint, interned in intermediate care facilities, and the rest suffered malpractice-related injuries. He added that one of the patients spent a week with compresses on his stomach.
Meanwhile, the doctor, who was heard last Wednesday at Portimão Hospital as part of an internal investigation launched by the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), asked to suspend the medical internship of special training in general surgery, a measure provided for by law, while the processes investigations into reported cases are ongoing.
The public prosecutor’s office also launched a process to investigate Diana Pereira’s complaints, and the Order of Physicians announced the formation of a scientific and technical commission of experts, independent physicians, to evaluate reported cases.
