With a promise to “not stop” and cries of “Costa is listening, people on the street” thousands of protesters arrived at the Palacio de Cristal in Porto, where this Sunday a party was held in the interior to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the PS happening.
Teachers and other education professionals, representatives of the Alojamento Local (AL), judicial officials, among other sectors, marched from the Boavista roundabout, from where they left at 3:20 pm and arrived at the Crystal Palace around 4:00 pm.
Monica Duarte, an operations assistant at a school in Vila Nova de Famalicán, brought her five-year-old daughter Lara “so she can understand what’s going on in the country and so she can better understand the difficulties that parents face.” through the houses.
“Yes, she is an only child, because with 761 euros a month and a frozen career, it is no longer possible. I already have extra work, but I can’t take it anymore,” he told Luce, still at the Boavista roundabout and before walking with Lara by the hand for more than two kilometers in black shirts, symbolizing mourning, and with a red carnation in hand, alluding to the Carnation Revolution.
The route was chosen after several interventions and with the organization of the protest, the Juntos por Portugal movement, setting the pace of the performances, always with the caveat, repeated several times, that “this movement is non-partisan and does not represent any union. even everyone is welcome.”
At the Boavista roundabout, where the assembly began before 2:00 pm, several people got into the truck, including David Almeida of the Alojamento Local Porto e Norte (ALPN) movement or James Fernandez, representative of the National Police Union (Sindpol).
“They are destroying local housing in order to give everything to large economic groups and hotel divisions. In Porto, we are 60% of the economy and tourism. We will stop being lorps,” said the head of ALPN.
“Let’s stop being lorps” was one of the most popular phrases of the day, along with “We don’t stop” or “Shoot” chants.
As for the Sindpor representative who criticized the police for not being able to go on strike, the demonstrators responded with the word “Freedom”.
The intervention round also included Gabriela Mota, representing the bailiffs, who announced a new week-long stop “soon”.
“Justice does not work without us. We cannot be a class that administers justice in a country, in a country where there is no justice and does not administer justice to those who work in it, ”he said shortly before a crowd of people began to march towards the Palacio de Cristal , following Rua Júlio Dinis with banners, whistles, bass drums, drums, posters and PSP elements opening the way and regulating traffic.
Even ahead, in addition to police cars, ladies dressed as Nazirites also stood out. In the head are canisters of paper sardines with messages handed out to those who watched the “parade” from the sidewalk or from cars.
Sarah Parente, whose family has an apartment for AL, was one of them and explained to Luza why she wore an apron, clogs and a shawl to come to the center of Porto and take part in the protest “from everyone and for Portugal”.
“This represents the fishmongers in Nazaré who stood at doors with signs saying ‘Chembres, room, Zimmer, room for rent’ many years ago. AL has always existed, but only now it is regulated, pays taxes and enriches the State, and now they want to destroy it,” he said.
Arriving and concentrated at the gates of the Palacio de Cristal, a column of people demands higher wages and living conditions and promises to continue the fight, while inside António Costa and Manuel Alegre, among other socialists, are expected to intervene.
The PS party, whose agenda called for the presence of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, current President of the Socialist International, and President of the European Socialist Party (PSE) Stefan Löfven, former Prime Minister of Sweden, gave the motto – another chant of order outside the Crystal Palace: ” That’s it, that’s it, the party’s over.”
The exit from the Boavista roundabout was accompanied by the sounds of Grandola Vila Morena. Upon arrival at the Crystal Palace, the Anthem of Portugal was played.
