The UNITA parliamentary group, the Angolan opposition, today expressed solidarity with the families of the victims of the rains and called on the executive branch to find long-term solutions to the problem of rainwater drainage in Luanda and other Angolan cities.
Since last August, the rains have killed more than 300 people and left 66,000 people homeless, according to a balance sheet released last Friday by the government.
In Luanda, ten people have died since last week as a result of heavy rains.
In a statement, the parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) expressed its “deeply touched by the dramatic situation” and expressed its solidarity with the families of the victims of this natural disaster, expressing a sense of regret for the deaths.
UNITA deputies also ask the executive branch to strive to “find long-term solutions to the problem of rainwater drainage in Luanda and other cities of Angola”, listening to the proposals of specialists, environmentalists, scientists, universities, traditional authorities and other public figures. which can help develop appropriate measures and solutions to mitigate the damage caused by cyclical natural events.
He also points to the need for the state to make “structural decisions, such as the effective institutionalization of local governments” and demands that political responsibility be assumed “rather than rewards that reduce the exclusivity of causes to the indiscipline of citizens for creating risk areas. authorized by the State Administration”.
UNITA emphasizes that “the State has a constitutional and legal obligation” to ensure urban planning and land use, as well as the protection of life and human dignity and the security of individuals, families and companies.
“Therefore, the executive branch cannot escape the responsibility for determining the general direction of public policy, its implementation, evaluation and accountability,” concludes the parliamentary group of the largest Angolan opposition party.
