An opposition election inspector for the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (Renamo) condemned on Monday that he was “severely beaten” by police officers while trying to prevent people outside the municipal radius from being misregistered at a registration post in central Mozambique.
Augusto Macorreia told Luza that he was “knocked to the ground” near the registration post and “beaten” by two Mozambican police officers when he tried to prevent the registration of several people who did not belong to the districts where the municipal elections would be held, and that, even in this case, they intended to register in Chimoio, central Mozambique.
According to the victim, he had abrasions on his leg and waist.
“They are registering people from Marera and Makate, which are outside of this Chimoio municipal area,” said Augusto Macorreia, inspector of the registration post in the April 7 area, stressing that, while demanding the reliability of the electoral process, he was surprised by the use of excessive force by agents providing process safety.
However, according to the victim, the police officers direct the registration queues and “force the inspectors not to demand anything” of the documents provided for in the process, violating the election law, which “establishes that agents must be at a distance of 300 meters.” from the post.
Mateus Mindu, a spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Manica, contacted Lusa and said that the case had not been reported to the authorities.
Registration for the sixth municipal elections on October 11 began nationwide on Thursday, with the goal of registering nearly 10 million voters in 65 constituencies with municipalities, according to the Technical Secretariat of the Electoral Administration.
On Thursday (20), António Mulima, Renamo’s provincial political delegate in Manica, denounced the arbitrary transfer of 13 civil servants and party members.
The official said the “penal transfers” to outlying areas mainly affected teachers in Machaze, Sussundenga, Mossurize, Gondola and Wanduzi districts, areas with strong opposition political influence.
“Renamo members who were in the electoral bodies of 2018 and 2019, as well as those who stood out in the work of the Renamo party, were or are victims of this dishonest transfer,” noted António Mulima, stressing that an administrative process was initiated in an attempt to return employees.
