Angola’s rain casualty balance rises to 332 in seven months

The Angolan authorities this Monday revised upward the death toll from the rains in Angola, which rose to 332 between 15 August 2022 and 21 April 2023.

At least 649 injured, 4,292 houses damaged, 3,827 houses destroyed, 1,741 flooded and 18,860 families affected.

The update on precipitation, which has been heavy in Angola in recent weeks, came at the end of a meeting of the Multisectoral Protection Commission chaired by Minister of State for Social Affairs Dalva Ringote.

The Angolan government announced on Friday that at least 308 people died due to rains between August 2022 and April 2023, affecting more than 13,000 families.

Manuel Lutango, member of the executive secretariat of the National Commission for Civil Protection and representative of the assembly, said on Monday that the contingency plan contains short, medium and long-term measures.

“This is a response plan, an emergency plan consists of response actions that need to be consolidated to support the affected population, this plan also provides for measures that will be applied in the short, medium and long term,” he said.

Without advancing the cost of the contingency plan, the official said the provincial civil protection commissions “serve as a fundamental basis for providing specific data on the victims and beneficiaries of the multi-sectoral response.”

The meeting, Manuel Lutango continued, also issued guidelines for an “immediate and emerging” response and an intention to update the national contingency plan.

“Because this contingency plan always generates a plan of action and / or responses for those affected,” he noted.

“The intended response is multi-sectoral, such as water purification, food distribution, shelter fortification, distribution of emergency supplies and other factors determined by the commission,” he assured.

Most Angolan provinces experience rain, but the province of Huambo had the highest death toll, with only 54, from the start of the rainy season in August 2022 to April 2023.

In Luanda, the capital of Angola, where heavy rains were recorded last week, accompanied by strong winds and lightning, authorities continue to examine the damage, with preliminary data indicating more than 10 deaths.
