The Japanese company Ispace this Tuesday suggested that the attempt to make the first private landing on the moon failed. Engineers were unable to re-establish contact with the Hakuto-R probe long after it was expected to make contact with the moon, Reuters reported.
“We have lost contact, so we must assume that we were unable to land on the surface of the moon,” said Takeshi Hakamada, chief executive of Ispace.
At the scheduled landing time, 5:40 pm in Portugal, mission control engineers waited for confirmation of contact with the lunar surface, but this did not happen. “Our engineers will continue to investigate the situation,” Khakamada said.
The spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida on a SpaceX rocket in December. According to Khakamada, the next landing attempt will be made in 2024. The Mission 2 spacecraft is already under construction.
