UN Secretary-General António Guterres must thoroughly investigate the kidnappings and deportations of Ukrainian children by Russian forces, diplomats said at the Security Council this Friday, stressing the importance of “accountability” as a deterrent going forward.
An informal meeting of the UN Security Council, jointly hosted by Albania, France and the United States (USA) and sponsored by dozens of countries, including Portugal, discussed concrete steps to prevent and hold accountable for the abduction and deportation of children in armed conflicts, with most interventions Russia’s war in Ukraine prevailed.
At the meeting, testimony was given from Ukrainian children who lived in the city of Kherson and were allegedly captured by Russian troops, who kept them away from their families for months.
