Ed Sheeran sang “Thinking Out Loud” in court to defend himself against accusations of plagiarism

British singer Ed Sheeran performed and sang the song “Thinking Out Loud” this Thursday in the federal court dock in Manhattan, USA, during a trial in which he is accused of plagiarizing Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On”.

According to Reuters, Ed Sheeran is being sued by the heirs of composer Ed Townsend, co-writer of the 1973 edited theme, who claim there are rhythmic elements that were used without permission. Townsend’s heirs want a cut of the profits from Thinking Out Loud.

“I am very inspired by things in my life and my family,” the singer said in court.

Ed Sheeran also mentioned that the song was a collaboration with friend Amy Wedge, who started playing the theme chords during a visit to her home in England.

“When I write vocals, it’s like phonetics,” added Ed Sheeran. Afterwards, he grabbed a guitar behind the witness stand, played the song’s chord progression, and sang the opening words, “When your legs don’t work like they used to.”

Earlier this week, lawyers for the heirs showed a video of Sheeran seamlessly switching between “Thinking Out Loud” and “Let’s Get It On” live, which they say is tantamount to admitting he copied the song.

The trial is expected to resume on Monday.
