Poland will inform NATO that the missile that struck the country this Tuesday was Ukrainian and that it will not activate Article 4 of the alliance treaty, a European diplomatic source confirmed to the agency. EFE🇧🇷
Earlier, Russia said Tuesday’s strikes only hit Ukraine, adding that the rocket that exploded in Poland was fired by a defense system in Kyiv.
“We would like to emphasize that high-precision strikes (on Tuesday) were carried out only on the territory of Ukraine, at a distance of more than 35 kilometers from the border with Poland,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The incident in Poland is being investigated by NATO, as it occurred on the territory of one of the countries of the Atlantic Alliance.
On Tuesday, shortly after the incident became known, the head of the Ukrainian state said that Russian missiles were the cause of the explosion in Poland.
“What we have long warned about has happened. Terror is not limited to our national borders. Russian missiles hit Poland,” the Ukrainian president said at the time.
Poland has called an emergency meeting with NATO allies after announcing that a “Russian-made projectile” fell on Polish territory near the border with Ukraine, killing two people.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said in Warsaw that it was “quite likely” that the missile “was launched by Ukraine” and added that there was “nothing to indicate” that it was “a deliberate attack on Poland.”
Thus, Duda referred to the fact that Poland would not refer to the NATO article, which provides for consultations between allies whenever there is a threat to the “territorial integrity, political independence or security” of any of the member states of the Atlantic Alliance.
The head of state told the media in Warsaw that “it is highly probable that the rocket was produced in the Soviet Union” and that it is a S300 model.
