According to the governor of the region, on Saturday in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol, a fire broke out in a fuel depot as a result of a drone strike.
“According to preliminary information, a drone became the cause of the fire,” Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev wrote in the Telegram messenger.
The fire was extinguished by 11:15 a.m., the Russian-appointed governor said. “The open fire has been extinguished on an area of 1,000 square meters,” Mikhail Razvozhaev said in Telegram.
The Russian-appointed head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said on Telegram that air defense and electronic warfare forces shot down two drones over the Crimean peninsula on Saturday. “There are no casualties or destruction,” he added.
Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev said no one was hurt. “The situation is under the control of our firefighters and all operational services,” he wrote. “Since the amount of fuel is large, it will take some time to contain the fire.”
Russian authorities blamed Ukraine for the attacks, but a Ukrainian military spokesman told Reuters they had no information to suggest Ukraine was responsible for the fuel depot fire.
Sevastopol has been the target of multiple airstrikes since the Russian invasion in February 2022, according to Reuters.
Sevastopol is an important city in Crimea (a peninsula reclaimed by the Russians from Ukraine in 2014) and home to an important Russian navy in the Black Sea.
