An explosion in the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, derailed a freight train on Monday, the local governor said on Telegram. There were no casualties.
Russian Railways, the country’s rail operator, said the incident occurred at 10:17 Moscow time (8:17 Portugal time). The locomotive and seven boxcars derailed, and the locomotive caught fire.
“At the 136th kilometer of the Bryansk-Unecha railway line, an unidentified explosive device went off, as a result of which the freight train derailed,” Alexander Bogomaz, Governor of the Bryansk Region, said in a Telegram channel.
Russian authorities say the region bordering Ukraine and Belarus has been repeatedly attacked by pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups in the 14 months since the invasion of Russia. On Saturday, the governor said four civilians had been killed after Kyiv shelled a village overseas.
The governor of the Leningrad region near St. Petersburg said that a power line exploded at night, and an explosive device was found near the second line. Bryansk Governor Alexander Drozdenko posted photos of destroyed power lines and metal poles on his Telegram page on Monday morning.
