France’s constitutional council on Wednesday rejected a second request for a new pension law to be put to a referendum, which the left had submitted at the last minute before passing a controversial government reform.
Not surprisingly, the Constitutional Council, the guarantor of France’s institutions, felt that the proposed Joint Initiative (JI) referendum, submitted by some 250 deputies and senators, did not meet the necessary requirements.
The left is now betting on the next step in the National Assembly on June 8, the day the Liot (Liberdades, Independentes, Overseas and Territory) independent group’s bill to repeal the new pension law that raises the country’s legal retirement age will be analyzed.
