Members of the government were received this Thursday with protests upon their arrival at the Tibaes Monastery in Braga for a meeting of the Council of Ministers by several dozen demonstrators associated with various sectors who demanded higher wages and career advancement.
In a noisy protest organized by the Union of Trade Unions of Braga (UBB), those present use megaphones and horns, shout slogans, wave posters and flags of Portugal and Fenprof.
Shouting slogans such as “dismissal”, “Government listens, Braga fights”, “the struggle continues, in schools or on the street”, “education is a right, nothing will work without it”, “life becomes more expensive, the people cannot stand”, ” wage increases are just and necessary”, “justice is a right, nothing can be done without it,” demonstrators shout as vehicles carrying ministers’ cars drive by.
Speaking to the Lusa agency, USB’s Joaquim Rodriguez explained that the protest is aimed at defending the demands of workers in various sectors, namely education, justice, textiles, metallurgy or trade.
For the leader of the union, “there is an urgent need to increase the wages of workers, given the rising cost of living, essential goods, housing,” as well as career advancement.
Joaquim Rodriguez cited the example of teachers or court officials who have been on strike in recent months.
In addition, he asked the government to allow collective bargaining, “which has ceased since 2003.”
The government is hosting the second day of the Government + Next program in the Braga district, culminating in a decentralized meeting of the Council of Ministers.
