A 34-year-old man ran a red light and lost control before hitting 18 people waiting for a bus near a migrant reception center. The place where the accident occurred is located near the border with Mexico.
The driver tried to flee the scene, but was stopped by several people present. Authorities are awaiting test results on the detainee to determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Reuters.
Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda acknowledges that the possibility of an intentional accident cannot be ruled out.
The victims are still being identified, but it is known that some of them had Venezuelan citizenship. The Venezuelan government has demanded an investigation to find out if the crime was motivated by hatred or xenophobia.
