The Kremlin on Wednesday mourned the death of France Presse (AFP) journalist Arman Soldin on Tuesday and asked for clarification on the circumstances of the incident.
“We need to understand the circumstances of the death of this journalist,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
A Russian spokesman said Ukraine’s allegations that Russians were responsible for the attack that killed an AFP reporter should not be taken for granted.
“We can only mourn the death of the AFP video coordinator in Ukraine,” Peskov added.
Soldin died on Tuesday afternoon as a result of a Grad missile attack in eastern Ukraine, journalists from the news agency who accompanied him said.
The attack took place around 4:30 pm local time (2:30 pm Lisbon) in the area of Chasov Yar, a Ukrainian town near Bakhmut, the main battlefield between Russian and Ukrainian forces since last year.
32-year-old Arman Soldin was accompanied by four colleagues who came out unharmed, and the Ukrainian military when they were hit by a volley of “rockets”.
Journalists regularly travel to the area to cover the fighting in the region, which has been the center of fighting in Ukraine for several months.
