Why these measures?
The measures taken are aimed at protecting the health of those who are exposed to tobacco smoke and preserving younger generations to add tobacco, reduce incentives to use, in order to achieve a tobacco-free generation by 2040.
Which changes?
The sale of heated tobacco containing flavors will be prohibited. The new law provides that the packaging of this type of tobacco, like traditional ones, will be illustrated with a photograph and a warning message about the health risks of tobacco use.
There will be restrictions in public places where you can smoke, as well as where you can buy tobacco. The intention will be to reduce the exposure so as not to increase the desire to experiment.
Will smoking be banned outside?
Outdoor smoking in health facilities, places reserved for minors such as schools and vocational training centers, sports facilities, public swimming pools and water parks is no longer allowed.
Is it still allowed to smoke on the terraces of restaurants and bars?
Smoking is prohibited in bars and clubs, as well as on esplanades or outdoor areas such as balconies or terraces that are enclosed or limited by walls or other types of structures. Smoking is also prohibited near the doors and windows of the respective establishments.
What happens in restaurants, bars and clubs that have adapted to the current law?
Premises designated for smokers in areas where smoking is no longer permitted will be prohibited from October 2023, “with the exception of restaurants and similar places that occupy these areas in accordance with a regulation that came into force at the beginning of 2023, will be able to keep them until 2030”.
Will vending machines disappear?
Vending machines will be allowed only in tobacco shops, airports, train stations, passenger bus stations, sea and river stations and at a distance of more than 300 meters from educational institutions.
Will smoking be banned at music festivals?
Only the advertising and sale of tobacco in these places will be prohibited.
What changes immediately?
From October 23, 2023, the sale of heated tobacco that changes the smell or taste of these products is prohibited. The packs of heated tobacco will have a message and photographs warning of the health risks tobacco use poses. Smoking will be prohibited outdoors, near places accessible to the general public or collective use.
What happens after the proposal is approved?
Once the proposed tobacco law amendment has been approved by the Council of Ministers, it will be debated and put to a vote by the Assembly of the Republic.
