In the first four months of this year, cinemas in Portugal registered a significant increase in attendance compared to the same period last year. According to the Institute of Film and Audiovisual (ICA), in January-April, a total of 3.3 million viewers visited the cinema, that is, 878,373 more tickets were issued (an increase of 36%).
In terms of gross ticket revenue, compared to the two periods, the growth is 44.8%, i.e. 6.1 million euros, for a total of 19.8 million. Despite this, film screening in our country has not yet fully recovered from the pandemic: in the first four months of 2019, ICA generated 4.6 million viewers and €24.8 million in revenue.
Directed by James Cameron, Avatar: The Road to Water, which premiered in December, topped the box office through April with 465,880 viewers. In 2nd place (released April 6) is “Super Mario Bros: The Movie” with 349,792 viewers.
