The Forum of Mozambican Associations of People with Disabilities (FAMOD) is complaining about being excluded from the voter registration process due to the location of registration posts in hard-to-reach places.
“We cannot say that people with disabilities have the same right to participate in the political life of the country if we continue to place registration posts in places like this,” said FAMOD Executive Director Clodoaldo Castiano during a visit to some places. in Maputo on Monday.
Installing registration teams in locations with multiple stairs or physical obstacles is one of the most common examples.
“Until we consider people with disabilities, this process will continue to be highly discriminatory,” he added, quoted by the Mozambique News Agency (AIM).
In light of the complaints, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) asked the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) to fix the problems “so that everyone can get to voter registration points.”
Voter registration began on April 20 and will end on June 3, with about 10 million voters expected to be registered out of a total population estimated at about 32 million.
Mozambique is starting a new electoral cycle this year with municipal elections on October 11, followed by general elections in 2024 (presidential, legislative and provincial).
